| Description |
There are three components to CPS: Intake, CPS Assessments (either Investigative Assessments or Family Assessments), and CPS In-Home Services (formally known as Case Planning and Case Management). The county DSS receives reports of alleged abuse, neglect or dependency from individuals, assesses whether the allegations meet the legal definitions (CPS Intake), and if so, initiates a CPS assessment to determine whether the family is in need of services, and if so, provides those services (CPS In-Home Services) until the conditions that led to the maltreatment are resolved and safety of the child can be assured. When the safety of the child cannot be assured, the county department of social services takes the child into the legal custody. Child Protective Services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through all 100 county departments of social services in North Carolina. |
