| Description |
Health Disparities is the difference in the incidence, prevalence mortality and burden of disease and other adverse health conditions that exist among specific population groups in the United States. (From: National Institutes of Health) In 1992, the Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities(OMHHD)was established by the NC General Assembly, via public law HB1340,Part 24, Section 165 to focus and provide the leadership on the reduction of health disparities. OMHHD engages faith-based organizations, local non-profits, tribes and other organizations to reduce healthcare access barriers and health disparities in their communities. To equip these organizations, OMHHD provides a range of capacity building services including trainings; leadership and skills development; resource development; financial assistance, infrastructure development; consultation and technical assistance. This approach has helped community-based organizations implement sound business practices, ensure fiscal accountability, write successful grants, influence local and state policies and legislation, and mobilize coalitions to address health disparities. |
