| Description |
The Rural Hospital Assistance Program utilizes a combination of federal and state funding designed to promote the financial stability of small rural hospitals while limiting duplication of services and enhancing quality of care. Through Federal Rural Hospital Flexibility and Small Rural Hospital Improvement Program (SHIP) funding, one third of NC's small rural hospitals have been certified as Critical Access Hospitals (CAH). Each CAH is required to collaborate with other health care agencies and establish referral agreements with larger hospitals to ensure a continuum of care for patients. The collaborations are intended to promote integration of health care within the hospitals' service areas, maximizing the use of finite health care dollars. The state-funded Hospital Critical Needs funding provides support to the most financially vulnerable rural hospitals that treat a higher percentage of medically indigent and uninsured patients. |
