Description Women's Health Program promotes the use of evidence based health care and educational interventions among women of childbearing age and their infants -- especially in communities with high infant mortality rates, unplanned pregnancies, and poor health status. Comprehensive reproductive and maternal health care, case management, family support, health education, outreach and referral are provided or assured for low income women and their infants in all 100 counties by local health departments and numerous community agencies. Services are designed to prevent adolescent and unintended pregnancies, increase consumption of folic acid prior to pregnancy to prevent birth defects, provide prenatal care early in pregnancy, identify and adequately care for high risk pregnant women including those living with depression, family violence, and substance abuse, educate families regarding childbirth preparation, parenting skills, and breastfeeding, reduce Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and exposure to tobacco smoke among infants, and improve survival rates of pre-term and other high risk infants. Services also assure the adequate health care and support for persons with Sickle Cell disease/trait.
