| Description |
Dispute Settlement Centers are governed by GS 7A-38.5 and GS 7A-38.6 and receive state funding passed through the Administrative Office of the Courts totaling 1.5 million dollars in FY 2009.
Dispute Settlement Centers also referred to as Community Mediation Centers are individual non-profits with local governing boards. Centers provide dispute resolution services to the courts, community and schools in 61 North Carolina Counties. For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008 centers had received 16,781 referrals from Criminal District Courts and other civilian generated complaints/warrants. This represents an increase of 19% over the prior year.
Mediation centers aid in reducing over burdened Criminal District Courts resolving 81% of cases mediated. During FY 2007/2008 centers provided conflict resolution services and training to 50,238 North Carolina residents at an average cost of $31.74 per person. Through structured volunteer training and recruitment programs conducted by the centers, last year volunteers contributed over 47,000 hours of service to the courts, communities and schools in North Carolina. This volunteer workforce contributed the equalivent of $857,000 in services.
