| Description |
The NC Division of Forest Resources (DFR) is one of five state forestry agencies that will implement a Regional Longleaf Pine Restoration Initiative and Fuel Reduction Program over the next two years (May 2009 - May 2011). Funding for this regional project is provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and totals $8,975,000. Each of the five states (North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia and Alabama) will be awarded an equal amount of funds, $1,742,000. $265,000 of the regional total is being managed by the USFS Southern Region State & Private Forestry and will support a regional project coordinator position and will fund development and printing a brochure on longleaf pine values & economics to be accomplished under a contract with the Longleaf Alliance.
The purpose of this effort is twofold. First and foremost is job creation. Secondly, this effort will support a variety of activities to restore longleaf pine ecosystems within its natural range. All activities will support the vision, goals and strategies articulated in the Range-wide Conservation Plan for Longleaf Pine, prepared by the Regional Working Group for Americas Longleaf, March 2009. The North Carolina effort will be concentrated within six focus areas: 1. Public Land Management; 2. Plant Material Capacity--LL Seed; 3. Plant Material Capacity--LL Seedlings; 4. Plant Material Capacity--Understory; 5. Planning & Coordination; 6. Education & Outreach. |
